WHY ARE WE THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS?

In today's world, 95% of potential customers look online first when they begin their search for a new used vehicle.  This takes a lot of the guesswork and wasteful driving around from dealer to dealer out of the equation.  Customers will look online to find the make, model and color of vehicle they want, then make a call to gather pricing and qualification information.  YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY DEALERSHIP OUT THERE!  Customers have many options these days!  They are more educated about pricing and financing options, and are exposed to thousands of ads as they search for their new vehicle.  

Many dealerships view the online marketplace as a "numbers game".  The more ads, the more exposure, the better chance they feel that they have in getting potential customers through the door.  This is true, but only to a small degree.  Today's customers are computer savvy and intelligent.  They know "scammy" or "suspicious" ad content when they see it.  Craigslist auto-posting software all looks the same- lines and lines of gibberish code at the bottom, pictures of inventory that don't look real or local, hundreds and hundreds of ads that all look the same- and they pass those ads by.

You have exactly ONE chance to make a first impression with your customer.  ONE.  As I said earlier, it's most likely that your potential customer will first come across your name and inventory online.  It is IMPERATIVE that the first impression that the customer receives be one of excitement, interest and TRUST. When a customer comes across the scam-like and suspicious ads that disappear all in one day because Craigslist has finally banned the accounts, or see thousands of those same ads for all different dealerships, the first impressive thoughts that the customer has is "SCAM".  "MISTRUST". "TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE".  And, finally and most importantly, "DON'T GO HERE".  Is this the type of first impression that you would like your potential customers to have? Are you willing to allow hundreds of new customers to bypass your ads every day? Are you willing to keep paying for ad services that generate only this impression of your company and nothing more?

Once you have decided on a real advertising company, there are many choices out there.   Direct website services are a great, reliable way to generate interest in your inventory.  Your company's direct website is genuine, and allows customers to both view your current inventory and get pre-approval through the use of an online form.  However, there are challenges with websites that aren't always met by dealerships.  One of the challenges is the maintenance and updating of website inventory.  Usually, the person responsible for updating the website inventory has other responsibilities. It is one responsibility in a long list of responsibilities that this employee has.  As many of the employee's other responsibilities are "here and now" responsibilities, the website updating gets constantly pushed to the back of the list, resulting in stale, outdated inventory.  Customers will see the same inventory again and again, and lose trust in the dealer.  Another challenge is the pre-approval form.  These forms ask for qualifying information that the customer fills out.  One major problem with this is the customer providing false information.  Often, the customer will fill in a false phone number or name because they don't want to be called and bothered by lots of salespeople.  Another issue is that the form is not a human being- if your customer has been on their job for a month, they may not qualify for your finance programs.  However, if that same customer has been on their job for a month because they have taken a step up in their field, and was on their prior job for ten years, you may lose that stable, well qualified customer because your form didn't ask.  Your form didn't have a rapport with the customer, and could not qualitatively "think" of asking the customer the right questions- because the form is not having a live conversation with that customer.

Paper publications are another great way to get your inventory out there.  However, there are very few paper publication choices in Oklahoma.  These publications, as a result of being big fish in a small pond, tend to be over crowded.  Hundreds of dealerships are all packed in with yours- side by side.  Not only is it overwhelming for a customer to make a choice, but chances are that they will find what they are looking for in the first few pages of ads.  If your ad is in the back, you may not have a chance of being seen.  These publications are also very, very expensive, with a median price of $1000 per week.  You are limited to only the inventory that you can fit on the pages you purchase.  When a customer does see your ad, and does call, they are redirected through a phone tree to your dealership's line.  What happens when they finally do call your ad line?

If the customer calls your ad line and doesn't receive a prompt answer, or if the person answering the call does not handle the customer properly, that customer simply goes on to the next advertisement.  Eventually, the customer will come across a "REAL" salesman- someone who will get them excited, get them pre-approved, then get them through the door.  These potential customers become "lost" customers.  You have lost the opportunity to meet with the customer, to offer your special services to the customer, and to become a reference point for that customer.  Some other dealership has treated your customer properly, and that customer has had their wants and needs satisfied by that dealership. That business is then lost to you.
